The new Explorer for Publishers is here!

EFP v2Following on from the success of last autumn’s relaunched Altmetric Explorer for Institutions, this week we upgraded all of our publisher customers to the brand new Altmetric Explorer for Publishers (EFP v2)!

Since 2012, the Explorer for Publishers has been used by publishing editors, marketing teams, and press officers to monitor and report on the attention data received by their journal articles. After the introduction of Altmetric tracking for books and chapters last year, we also added over a million new records to the Explorer database (available with a Books Index subscription). In our press announcement for the new Explorer for Publishers platform, one of our beta testers Danny Davies (Senior Digital Innovation Executive at Cambridge University Press) noted: “It’s particularly great to now be able to filter and report on the attention for books – functionality which wasn’t available in the previous version. Intelligence around book usage is a key growth area for us and the data provided by Altmetric will help us identify new opportunities and refine the scope and direction of our existing portfolio.”


EFP v2 Summary ChartWhat’s new in EFP v2?

As part of the upgrade to version 2 of the Explorer, we have added many fantastic new features, including the option to search by publication date, sort by attention sources and mentioned timeframes, and filter by output type (e.g., articles, datasets, books, chapters, etc.). We’ve also greatly improved many existing features, including the Mentions view (previously the Activity tab), email alerting, and searching by ORCID. Publisher filtering is much more refined and flexible, with new support for multiple DOI prefixes as well as the option to search for imprints. In addition, we now allow users to search for up to 25,000 scholarly identifiers and/or 25,000 journal ISSNs at a time, making it easier than ever to work across different analysis tools. 

The user interface has undergone many improvements, and is now organised into 3 main sections:

  1. A clever search bar helps users to find the research outputs in the full Altmetric database by suggesting relevant results. Below the bar, there is an Advanced Search option that offers even more flexibility for crafting search queries.
  2. A colourful results section shows all the “donuts” that make up the search results, making it easy to dive into individual Altmetric details pages.
  3. A powerful Results Analysis panel contains 5 great tools for diving deeper into the aggregate attention data: the Summary tab (a chart of mentions over time), the Highlights tab (recent interesting, notable news attention), the Demographics tab (a map of global Twitter reach), the Mentions tab (mentions by attention source and time), and the Journals/Collections tab (a tool for comparing attention for multiple journals).


New integration with Web of Science

You may have heard that we recently partnered with Clarivate Analytics to bring Web of Science citations to the Explorer for Institutions platform. Now, with the release of Explorer for Publishers, customers who also subscribe to Web of Science can opt to activate the Web of Science citation Web of Science Integration in Altmetricdata integration within the Explorer details pages.

Web of Science Web Services Lite subscribers will get access to Web of Science citation counts within individual Altmetric details pages in the Explorer, whereas Web of Science Web Services Expanded and InCites customers will get the citation counts on details pages, as well as a list of recent citing works.

Introducing EFP v2Getting started with EFP v2

All existing Explorer for Publishers users should now have access to the new platform, and simply need to log in with their existing credentials. All previously-saved workspaces and email alerts have already been transferred over to the new platform, and now appear in the new “Saved Searches” panel.
