Abstract

To determine classification criteria for tubulointerstitial nephritis with uveitis (TINU) DESIGN: Machine learning of cases with TINU and 8 other anterior uveitides. Cases of anterior uveitides were collected in an informatics-designed preliminary database, and a final database was constructed of cases achieving supermajority agreement on the diagnosis, using formal consensus techniques. Cases were split into a training set and a validation set. Machine learning using multinomial logistic regression was used on the training set to determine a parsimonious set of criteria that minimized the misclassification rate among the anterior uveitides. The resulting criteria were evaluated on the validation set. One thousand eighty-three cases of anterior uveitides, including 94 cases of TINU, were evaluated by machine learning. The overall accuracy for anterior uveitides was 97.5% in the training set and 96.7% in the validation set (95% confidence interval 92.4, 98.6). Key criteria for TINU included anterior chamber inflammation and evidence of tubulointerstitial nephritis with either 1) a positive renal biopsy or 2) evidence of nephritis (elevated serum creatinine and/or abnormal urine analysis) and an elevated urine β-2 microglobulin. The misclassification rates for TINU were 1.2% in the training set and 0% in the validation set, respectively. The criteria for TINU had a low misclassification rate and appeared to perform well enough for use in clinical and translational research.

Attention Score in Context

Attention Score in Context

This research output has an Altmetric Attention Score of 19. This is our high-level measure of the quality and quantity of online attention that it has received. This Attention Score, as well as the ranking and number of research outputs shown below, was calculated when the research output was last mentioned on 12 August 2025.
All research outputs
#2,452,359
of 33,185,473 outputs
Outputs from American Journal of Ophthalmology
#286
of 8,548 outputs
Outputs of similar age
#49,323
of 476,038 outputs
Outputs of similar age from American Journal of Ophthalmology
#5
of 126 outputs
Altmetric has tracked 33,185,473 research outputs across all sources so far. Compared to these this one has done particularly well and is in the 92nd percentile: it's in the top 10% of all research outputs ever tracked by Altmetric.
So far Altmetric has tracked 8,548 research outputs from this source. They typically receive a little more attention than average, with a mean Attention Score of 5.4. This one has done particularly well, scoring higher than 96% of its peers.
Older research outputs will score higher simply because they've had more time to accumulate mentions. To account for age we can compare this Altmetric Attention Score to the 476,038 tracked outputs that were published within six weeks on either side of this one in any source. This one has done well, scoring higher than 89% of its contemporaries.
We're also able to compare this research output to 126 others from the same source and published within six weeks on either side of this one. This one has done particularly well, scoring higher than 96% of its contemporaries.
