The main risk gene variant for Alzheimer's APOE4 has a *much* higher effect size in Europeans--turns out African haplotypes show differential enhancer activity in in brain cell types (fine-mapped variant lies in intron of gene adjacent to APOE !)
Pleiotropy and polymorphisms means different lineages sometimes have different subtle ways of getting from genes to traits. -A recurring developing theme since the anti single 'gene for' arguments of the 80's or so.
