Abstract

Agmatine, a putative neurotransmitter plays a vital role in learning and memory. Although, it is considered as endogenous ligand of imidazoline receptors, exhibits high affinity towards α-adrenoceptors (α-ARs), nitric oxide synthase (NOS), and N-methyl-D -aspartic acid (NMDA) receptors. These substrates within locus coeruleus (LC) are critically involved in learning and memory processes. Male Wistar rat were stereotaxicaly cannulated into LC and hippocampus. Different groups were administered with agmatine (i.p./i-LC) to observe its effect on acquisition, consolidation and retrieval of IA memory. NO donor (SNG), non-specific (L-NAME) and specific NOS inhibitors (L-NIL, 7-NI, L-NIO), α2-AR antagonist (yohimbine), agonist (clonidine) were administered before agmatine in LC. Moreover, influence of intrahippocampal NMDA antagonist, MK-801 was observed on memory enhancing effect of agmatine, SNG and yohimbine. In addition, immunohistochemical expression of TH and eNOS were observed in LC. Agmatine (i-LC/ i.p.) facilitates the retrieval of memory in IA test. S-Nitrosoglutathione potentiated while L-NAME and L-NIO decreased the agmatine's effect in IA test. In contrast, L-NIL and 7-NI does not alter the effect of agmatine. Further, yohimbine potentiated whereas clonidine attenuated effects of agmatine within LC. Moreover, effect of agmatine, SNG and yohimbine was blocked by intrahippocampal administration of NMDA antagonist, MK-801. In addition, agmatine treatment significantly increased the population of TH- as well as eNOS-immunoreactive elements in the LC. Thus results of present study have demonstrated that the facilitation of memory retrieval in IA task by agmatine is probably mediated by eNOS-NO-NE pathway in LC.

Attention Score in Context

Attention Score in Context

This research output has an Altmetric Attention Score of 1. This is our high-level measure of the quality and quantity of online attention that it has received. This Attention Score, as well as the ranking and number of research outputs shown below, was calculated when the research output was last mentioned on 19 November 2016.
All research outputs
#28,515,303
of 34,291,661 outputs
Outputs from British Journal of Pharmacology
#8,667
of 9,876 outputs
Outputs of similar age
#264,527
of 335,822 outputs
Outputs of similar age from British Journal of Pharmacology
#44
of 51 outputs
Altmetric has tracked 34,291,661 research outputs across all sources so far. This one is in the 9th percentile – i.e., 9% of other outputs scored the same or lower than it.
So far Altmetric has tracked 9,876 research outputs from this source. They typically receive more attention than average, with a mean Attention Score of 8.8. This one is in the 7th percentile – i.e., 7% of its peers scored the same or lower than it.
Older research outputs will score higher simply because they've had more time to accumulate mentions. To account for age we can compare this Altmetric Attention Score to the 335,822 tracked outputs that were published within six weeks on either side of this one in any source. This one is in the 11th percentile – i.e., 11% of its contemporaries scored the same or lower than it.
We're also able to compare this research output to 51 others from the same source and published within six weeks on either side of this one. This one is in the 9th percentile – i.e., 9% of its contemporaries scored the same or lower than it.
