Abstract

A new concept of a single hypothalamic releasing hormone which is capable of releasing either LH or FSH (luteinizing hormone or follicle-stimulating hormone) is presented, and studies are described which summarize its physiological and chemical properties. Porcine LH-RH (LH releasing hormone) in a high state of purity was found to stimulate in rats the release of LH and FSH; this also occurred in humans. The hormone was isolated and was found to consist of 10 amino acids; the hormone has been synthesized, and the synthetic material has been shown to possess the same properties as the natural material in rats: stimulation of the release of LH and FSH in vitro and in vivo. Addition of nanogram amounts of natural porcine LH-RH/FSH-RH or synthetic hormone is capable of stimulating both release and synthesis of LH and FSH in vitro. 12 steroids used for contraception did not block the release of LH and FSH after administration of LH-RH. There is some evidence that progesterone pretreatment blocks the response to LH-RH, while estrogen seems to increase the response to LH-Rh in rats. Clinical studies clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of porcine LH-RH in stimulating the release of LH in the human. The smallest dose which induced a significant rise (p=.01) in LH was 10mcg. LH levels were elevated in prepubertal children as well as in normal adults by the hormone. One woman with secondary amenorrhea ovulated and conceived after treatment with LH-RH. This and other clinical studies suggest LH-RH may be useful in the treatment of fertility and as a diagnostic aid in distinguishing between pituitary and hypothalamic disorders.

Attention Score in Context

Attention Score in Context

This research output has an Altmetric Attention Score of 6. This is our high-level measure of the quality and quantity of online attention that it has received. This Attention Score, as well as the ranking and number of research outputs shown below, was calculated when the research output was last mentioned on 04 September 2025.
All research outputs
#7,591,076
of 34,410,798 outputs
Outputs from Fertility & Sterility
#3,590
of 12,467 outputs
Outputs of similar age
#596
of 5,000 outputs
Outputs of similar age from Fertility & Sterility
#1
of 3 outputs
Altmetric has tracked 34,410,798 research outputs across all sources so far. This one has received more attention than most of these and is in the 73rd percentile.
So far Altmetric has tracked 12,467 research outputs from this source. They typically receive a lot more attention than average, with a mean Attention Score of 11.8. This one has gotten more attention than average, scoring higher than 63% of its peers.
Older research outputs will score higher simply because they've had more time to accumulate mentions. To account for age we can compare this Altmetric Attention Score to the 5,000 tracked outputs that were published within six weeks on either side of this one in any source. This one has done well, scoring higher than 76% of its contemporaries.
We're also able to compare this research output to 3 others from the same source and published within six weeks on either side of this one. This one has scored higher than all of them
