Recent studies have advanced our understanding of innate immune mechanisms that protect the airways and maintain a sterile lung. Multiple antimicrobial peptides and proteins have been identified in airway secretions and their roles are beginning to be established in animal models. Moreover, evidence for coupling between the innate and adaptive immune systems is beginning to emerge. The understanding of the innate airway defense system offers the opportunity for the development of novel therapeutic approaches.

Attention Score in Context
This research output has an Altmetric Attention Score of 6. This is our high-level measure of the quality and quantity of online attention that it has received. This Attention Score, as well as the ranking and number of research outputs shown below, was calculated when the research output was last mentioned on 21 January 2025.
All research outputs
#7,405,506
of 34,054,827 outputs
Outputs from Current Opinion in Immunology
#768
of 2,421 outputs
Outputs of similar age
#21,816
of 160,525 outputs
Outputs of similar age from Current Opinion in Immunology
#5
of 12 outputs
Altmetric has tracked 34,054,827 research outputs across all sources so far. This one has received more attention than most of these and is in the 73rd percentile.
So far Altmetric has tracked 2,421 research outputs from this source. They typically receive more attention than average, with a mean Attention Score of 7.8. This one has gotten more attention than average, scoring higher than 53% of its peers.
Older research outputs will score higher simply because they've had more time to accumulate mentions. To account for age we can compare this Altmetric Attention Score to the 160,525 tracked outputs that were published within six weeks on either side of this one in any source. This one has done well, scoring higher than 76% of its contemporaries.
We're also able to compare this research output to 12 others from the same source and published within six weeks on either side of this one. This one is in the 33rd percentile – i.e., 33% of its contemporaries scored the same or lower than it.
