Abstract

Head injuries are a significant source of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Auditory and vestibular dysfunction may occur following trauma to the temporal bone (TB), including the lateral skull base. The porcine model is a commonly-used large animal model to investigate head injury. Reports detailing porcine TB anatomy based on high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) imaging, however, are limited. Herein, we employ HRCT to evaluate and describe the bony anatomy of the porcine TB and skull base. High-resolution multidetector and cone beam computed tomography (CT) were used to image porcine TBs (n=16). TBs were analyzed for major anatomic structures. Porcine temporal bone anatomy was readily identifiable by HRCT. While some variability exists, the ossicular chain, vestibule, cochlea, course of the facial nerve, and skull base are similar to humans. Major differences included position of the external auditory canal and mastoid, as well as presence of the petrous carotid canal. Findings may serve as an atlas to evaluate the porcine middle and inner ear, as well as lateral skull base injuries for future porcine head injury models or other studies that require CT-based analysis.

Attention Score in Context

Attention Score in Context

This research output has an Altmetric Attention Score of 1. This is our high-level measure of the quality and quantity of online attention that it has received. This Attention Score, as well as the ranking and number of research outputs shown below, was calculated when the research output was last mentioned on 05 July 2018.
All research outputs
#29,079,509
of 32,151,140 outputs
Outputs from Journal of Neurotrauma
#2,950
of 3,162 outputs
Outputs of similar age
#335,083
of 377,853 outputs
Outputs of similar age from Journal of Neurotrauma
#42
of 47 outputs
Altmetric has tracked 32,151,140 research outputs across all sources so far. This one is in the 1st percentile – i.e., 1% of other outputs scored the same or lower than it.
So far Altmetric has tracked 3,162 research outputs from this source. They typically receive a lot more attention than average, with a mean Attention Score of 10.6. This one is in the 1st percentile – i.e., 1% of its peers scored the same or lower than it.
Older research outputs will score higher simply because they've had more time to accumulate mentions. To account for age we can compare this Altmetric Attention Score to the 377,853 tracked outputs that were published within six weeks on either side of this one in any source. This one is in the 1st percentile – i.e., 1% of its contemporaries scored the same or lower than it.
We're also able to compare this research output to 47 others from the same source and published within six weeks on either side of this one. This one is in the 1st percentile – i.e., 1% of its contemporaries scored the same or lower than it.
