An experimental study by Facebook shows that in-person interaction and nonverbal cues are not strictly necessary for emotional contagion. The observation of others’ positive experiences via text-based messages constitutes a positive experience for people.

@dgarcia_eu @B_Lindstroem @william__brady @acerbialberto There is one piece of info I love from the 2014 Facebook contagion paper. They call it the "withdrawal effect":People who were exposed to fewer emotional posts (of either valence) in their News Feed
Algorithms can strongly influence our emotions, as this seminal — but heavily criticized — experiment with barely 700,000 users shows. When Facebook reduced positive posts, people were less likely to use positive words. https://t.co/8KnTHNNWln

@bergerbell Looks like this 2014 test run for what is going on now. "Experimental evidence of massive-scale emotional contagion through social networks" https://t.co/jk0hN7G16p
@PolemicTMM Note, though, that a paper published by Facebook in PNAS in 2014 suggested (in passing) that the “if it bleeds it leads” approach to news might be more damaging than the “social comparison” effect of relentless good news. https://t.co/P1GvZBt

Here's a link to the paper. Also, the blowback made social media companies reluctant to publish experiments. They are obviously still experimenting on you all the time for commercial purposes, but there is much less sharing with the scientific community ht

Just in case anyone needs a reminder. This is the study Facebook and Princeton University did to see if they could influence emotions based on what shows up in users newsfeed. They were shocked to find they could and that they could do it with text alone.
