Abstract

Cholangiocarcinoma has poor prognosis and short term-survival. Here, we report the case of a patient with unusually prolonged survival. Our patient was a 56-year-old Arab man with a 6-month history of obstructive jaundice. A computed tomography scan of his abdomen revealed a mass at the confluence of the hepatic ducts with suspected malignant strictures on endoscopy. A positive tissue diagnosis was achieved more than 18 months after commencement of his symptoms. He remained functional throughout this period despite recurrent episodes of cholangitis. Cholangiocarcinoma is a presumably fatal disease, especially because patients tend to present late with unresectable disease. Many patient-related and disease-related factors may alter survival.

Attention Score in Context

This research output has an Altmetric Attention Score of 1. This is our high-level measure of the quality and quantity of online attention that it has received. This Attention Score, as well as the ranking and number of research outputs shown below, was calculated when the research output was last mentioned on 02 March 2018.
All research outputs
#10,067,725
of 12,585,503 outputs
Outputs from Journal of Medical Case Reports
#1,138
of 2,071 outputs
Outputs of similar age
#203,623
of 271,904 outputs
Outputs of similar age from Journal of Medical Case Reports
#1
of 1 outputs
Altmetric has tracked 12,585,503 research outputs across all sources so far. This one is in the 11th percentile – i.e., 11% of other outputs scored the same or lower than it.
So far Altmetric has tracked 2,071 research outputs from this source. They receive a mean Attention Score of 3.2. This one is in the 20th percentile – i.e., 20% of its peers scored the same or lower than it.
Older research outputs will score higher simply because they've had more time to accumulate mentions. To account for age we can compare this Altmetric Attention Score to the 271,904 tracked outputs that were published within six weeks on either side of this one in any source. This one is in the 13th percentile – i.e., 13% of its contemporaries scored the same or lower than it.
We're also able to compare this research output to 1 others from the same source and published within six weeks on either side of this one. This one has scored higher than all of them
