One could park one of these file trees on AWS S3 – or Google's, etc. – serve it up over HTTP. That would make it much easier for the web dev community to play with data normally stored in NWB2.0 as one big HDF5 file. Both Occam and Rogers would approve.

Exdir is the sort of thing the web eventually coughs up. Think Innovator's Dilemma. Some problem needs to be solved. Some tech structures are built. Later they get deconstructed and re-imagined replacing components with equivalent tech already invented.
