I love opening up MMWRs and seeing former peers & friends as authors. Great work and congrats on the first-author, Sam!
@sean_spoonts @AlexBerenson @JohnCassidy Neither of us has any data on COVID-19 hospitalizations for the state of Florida. It is a well-known phenomenon that uninfected people avoid going to the hospital when C19 cases are surging out of fear of catching i

We are going to see there was a surge of all cause mortality as a result of COVID, and it will be further compounded by a lack of attention to chronic medical issues.

Understanding what is happening with the non-Covid disease burden & proactively preparing to address it amid the ongoing pandemic (& its likely recurrent waves) is a major priority now & will become an even bigger issue as we head into the Fall
That said, the counterpositive is that we’re almost certainly significantly undercounting the harm of our broad health care shutdown. I can’t imagine actual rates of strokes, heart attacks, and diabetic emergencies just so happened to spontaneously drop.

And ⬆️ out of hospitals cardiac arrests and deaths.
With the aura of #COVID19, patients in need of urgent care still staying away from the emergency room. In a span of 10 weeks, ED visits declined 23% for heart attack, 20% for stroke, 10% for uncontrolled high blood pressure, #CDC says. https://t.co/SZwOCv8
