Altmetric® award for promising altmetrics research: Terms and Conditions

These Terms and Conditions (the “terms”) govern the relationship between you and Digital Science & Research Solutions Ltd (“Altmetric” or “we”) in respect of its award for promising altmetrics research (the “Award”).  Please read these terms carefully before submitting an application. By submitting your application, you agree to be bound by these terms and represent that you satisfy all of the eligibility requirements set out below.  If you do not satisfy the eligibility criteria or do not agree to any of the terms, you should not submit an application.

You may want to save a copy of these terms for future reference.


By submitting your application, you confirm that you:

(a) are an individual who is at least 18 years old at the time of entry;

(b) are making your submission on your own behalf and not on behalf of any third party (including any institution or organization); and

(b) do not reside in a country that is prohibited from entering into competitions of this nature or that is subject to trade sanctions.

Application Process

In order to be eligible for the Award, you need to prepare a written application detailing your research project and how you would use the award for that project (full details of what should be included in the application can be found on, submit your application via webform, and confirm your agreement to these terms and conditions.  Your submission and confirmation of your agreement to these terms must be received no later than 23.59 BST on May 8 2020 (the “Submission Period”). No other means of entry will be accepted.

The winner of the Award will be chosen by a panel of judges, taking into account how well-defined, reasonable, and technically sound the research plan is and the overall quality of the application; or otherwise at our discretion.  Our decision regarding any aspect of the application process, the choosing of the winner or the awarding of the award will be final and binding, and we will be under no obligation to provide any reasons therefor.


One winner will be awarded up to USD $2,000, which must be used within 12 months of receipt (or in accordance with the research plan set out in your application, if later) and is subject to the terms set out in the “Winner” section below. No funds shall be paid unless and until we are satisfied that such payment is for legitimate purposes in accordance with those terms. The award is non-transferable and we will not be liable if the award cannot be paid for any reason.  If any award goes unclaimed for more than 10 days after we have tried to contact the winner by the e-mail address provided for that purpose, or if the winner does not comply with the “Winner” section below, the chosen winner will forfeit the award and a new winner may be chosen.

Award Entries

Only one application per researcher / research team will be considered.

Entries received outside of the Submission Period, including as a result of events beyond your control, such as network or computer failures, will not be accepted. In the event of a dispute over who submitted a winning entry, our decision will be final.

By submitting your application, you confirm that:

  1. the information you have provided is accurate;
  2. the submission is not infringing of any third party’s rights / is your original work;
  3. you are not attempting to undermine the fair and legitimate operation of the award by cheating, hacking, deception or other unfair practices or intending to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass; and
  4. we may use your submission as detailed in these terms.

No entries from agents, third parties, organized groups or entries automatically generated by computer will be accepted. Entries not in accordance with the entry instructions, including at, may not be eligible or accepted.


If you are chosen as the winner, you agree:

  1. the award funds must only be used for the research described in your application (but not travel or other similar costs or expenses e.g. attendance at conferences);
  2. you will closely monitor the progress and success of the research, details of which you will provide on request from time to time;
  3. the aims and objectives of the project are being met and that these terms are adhered to.
  4. the results of your research must be made freely available once the work has been completed and shared with the larger community via the Altmetric blog;
  5. to acknowledge the award in any materials that refer to the research, including presentations. Such acknowledgement should include the Altmetric name and logo (which must be used strictly in accordance with applicable guidelines and removed on request);
  6. you can accept the award on behalf of yourself and/or your research team.

As you would expect, you will be responsible for any legal, regulatory and other requirements, including tax and accounting, associated with receiving and spending the funds. You may be required to confirm acceptance of these and related terms, and provide additional information, as a condition of receipt of the award.

Use of Submissions

By submitting your application, you grant us and our affiliates a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, transferable, irrevocable license to make use of any submission you make, in whole or in part, for any lawful purpose (provided that reasonable endeavors are made to attribute you where appropriate).


By entering the award, we may use your personal information as set out in our Privacy Policy at, and if you are the winner, in publicity relating to the award and your submission.


We will not be responsible if the application process does not take place, or if the winner cannot be chosen or any award cannot be awarded or fulfilled, due to events outside of our control. If we consider that the application process, the choosing of the winner or the awarding of the award cannot take place as described in these terms, including because of any circumstances which, in our sole determination, corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of those processes, we may cancel, modify or suspend the award.


We hereby exclude liability for any direct or indirect loss, claim, damage, expense or cost (howsoever caused, whether by negligence or otherwise) arising from or in connection with these terms and / or the award, including the application process, your submission, the choosing of the winner and the awarding of the award. You agree that under no circumstances will our total aggregate liability to you exceed the amount (if any) you have paid to validly submit your application. Nothing in these terms shall limit or exclude our liability to the extent such exclusion or limitation is not permitted by law and these terms shall be construed accordingly.


We reserve the right to modify and amend these terms from time to time, including for clarification purposes. If any provision of these terms is found by any court or administrative body of competent jurisdiction to be invalid or unenforceable, such invalidity or unenforceability shall not affect the other provisions. Failure or delay by us to enforce any of these terms shall not constitute a waiver. These terms shall be governed by English Law and the courts of England shall have exclusive jurisdiction.
